ES: Congratulations on your debut novel, Rori! How did you dream up the book idea??
RS: The funny thing is one morning I just woke up with the idea. I quickly grabbed a pen and notebook from my nightstand and wrote down a rough outline. Over the next few weeks, I flushed out the outline until it was multiple pages. Then I started writing! It's so strange how these ideas work...you'd almost think it's a sprite or some kind of muse just implanting them in your brain while you sleep. A lot of authors I know say they get their best ideas right when they wake up!
ES: Wow – do you rent out your muse?! ;) I think we’d have a lot of takers! You have two kids and a full time job…and now a writing career! Can you give fellow authors some ideas on how to write, publish, and promote a book with such a full plate??!!
RS: It is a balancing act. My family comes first, and I always make sure they're getting my attention when they need it. But I also set up some designated writing time. Either for an hour after the kids go to sleep or for half a day on the weekend. I used to be part-time, and that was awesome because I could write when my kids and husband were at school/work. But since I went back to work full-time it's definitely been a balancing act. One tip I can give is to take advantage of all time. Even minutes. I don't wait to write until I have a huge block of time. I write everywhere. On metro rides. While waiting at a doctor's office. Any down time is an opportunity for me to be flushing out a novel outline or writing down scene dialogue for use later.
ES: That sounds like a world-class balancing act! What is your funniest writing habit or most unusual writing quirk?
RS: This I can answer! I usually do most of my writing at home. And I can't sit down to write with a clear head until my house is reasonably clean. I can't write amid clutter. The situation does make for a clean house!
ES: Any ideas for a next book or sequel?
RS: Yes, definitely! ELECTED is part of a 3 book series. The next book, SUSPECTED, is written and currently in edits!
ES: Congratulations!!! I'm sure you'll build a loyal fan base who will be anxiously awaiting release of the sequel.
